For The
Nelson why certain rabbis were
not cited in his listing of Con-
servative Halachic decisions. He
said that he picked those that
best illustrated his point, adding
that there were many who could
have been included.
A woman asked Rabbi
Goldberg how the Orthodox ap-
proach reconciled with the
changing needs .of women, and
she mentioned the thrill she had
when she first read from the To-
rah, "Holding the Torah from
the outside," answered Rabbi
Goldberg, "is not as important
as holding the Torah from the
inside. You can't hold up the
symbolic as the cherished prin-
ciple, and allow the cherished
principle to fail."
At the beginning of the ques-
tion period, Ed Shifrin asked if
the differences in interpretation
of Halachah are so severe "that
we must agree to split?"
Rabbi Nelson responded that
"by meeting and talking we
have listened to each other's
points of view and learned."
Rabbi Goldberg added, "The fact
that we can learn has always
been a Jewish trait."
The concluding lecture in the
Midrasha series will be herd
7:30 p.m. Monday at United He-
brew Schools' auditorium. Rabbi
Chaskell Lookstein, president of
the New York Board of Rabbis,
and Rabbi Daniel Syme, former
Detroiter and vice president of
the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, will discuss ap-
proaches to bridging the gap be-
tween Judaism's denominations.
Rabbi Efry Spectre of Adat
Shalom Synagogue will serve as
moderator.
The lecture is free and open to
the public.
