According to Mrs. Silver, "The economic middle class has the idea that social agencies provide services only for the poor. They don't realize that the agencies were set up to help everyone." "Take the case of a middle- class family living in a northern suburb. The husband was laid off his his job and the wife had no employable skills. The family had no relatives locally, and things went from bad to worse as they fell behind on the mortgage and other bills. One day, out of desperation, the wife called us." A JIS volunteer talked to the woman and calmed her. To- gether they decided on a plan of action to quickly help the fam- ily. The volunteer called Jewish Family Service, which arranged for counseling for the woman and her husband, food stamps, and Medicaid for her child. After the family was back on its , . and her husband. JIS has called back several, times, and at last report, both husband and wife have new jobs and the family is learning to cope with its situa- tion. Sometimes services 'aren't available, so JIS alerts the Jewish Welfare Federation planning department. Funded by the Max M. Fisher Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion's United Jewish Charities, JIS is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The phone number is 967-HELP (4357), with -an answering machine taking calls during off hours. "We've made a lot of friends in the community,"' says Mrs. Silver, "and if all the 'God bless yous' that we've received come true, we'll all be , taken care of for a long time." ❑ David Moss is on the public relations staff of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit. Shcharansky And Wife To Visit U.S. In May Tel Aviv (JTA) — Anatoly Shcharansky and his wife Avital will visit the United States in May, it was reported here last Monday. The date of their visit was not announced. According to friends, the couple will meet with President Reagan at the. White House. It will be Shcharansky's first visit to the U.S. His wife was there many times during the nine years he spent in the Soviet Gulag to mobilize official and public support for his release. She met with Reagan and lead- ing members of congress on those occasions. Friends of the couple said the Shcharansky's have received threats from the Soviet Union that even the current trickle of Jewish emigration would be halted if they went to the U.S. and indulged in anti•Soviet propaganda. But they will not bow to such blackmail, the friends said. Shcharansky was released on February 11 as part of an East- West prisoner exchange and flew to Israel the same, day with Avital who had gone to West Germany to meet him.,The cou- ple spent the past month month vacationing in northern Israel. There had been reports' eports that he would accompany Prime Minis- ter Shimon Peres who recently left on a four-day trip to U.S. , But Shcharansky apparently wants to complete dental work begun at Hadassah Hospital's dental clinic before he goes to U.S. His teeth deteriorated dur- ing nearly a decade in Soviet. prisons and labor camps. The Shcharansky's have been invited to New York as well as to Wabhington. Mayor Edward Koch will be their host. They plan to tour the U.S. afterwards to address Soviet Jewry groups all over the country, friends said. Golan Druze Declare Loyalty To Syria Jerusalem (JTA) — The four Druze , villages on the Golan Heights were quiet last Sunday after a noisy mass demonstra- tion against the Israeli govern- ment in which one police officer was injured. Several thousand Golan Druze converged on Majdal Shams, the largest of the vil- lages, to protest a, police raid on a local refrigerated warehoUse where agricultural produce is stored. The, police confiscated two tons of apples belonging to Druze growers who allegely failed to submit tax returns. The Druze claim the Israeli authorities have been harassing them, especially since last month when Prime Minister Shimon Peres visited the ter- ritory formally annexed by Israel in 1981. The Golan Druze say they are citizens of Syria and loyal to that country. They refuse to accept Israeli citizen- ship and, for a long time after the annexation, would .not ac- cept Israeli identification cars. .
