Patrilineal descent does not automatically make them Jewish," but they can be Jewish through Jewish identity and Jewish actions. "It. is a response to a specific need." Quoting Rabbi Alexander Schindler, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (Reform), Rabbi Roman said, "Mixed marriage is the problem we have after eat- ing the sweetness of emancipa- tion. If emancipation is no good," Rabbi Roman commented, "than we should pick up and move to Israel." He said American Jewry has reached great heights, but it is also very young in terms of Jewish history "and we are still trying to find our history and our solutions to our problems." Alex Blumenberg, co- chairman of the planning com- mittee for the Midrasha series and moderator for Mondays' event, called for questions from the audience. Many of the ini- tial statements from the floor were in the form of opinions or examples of mixed marriages. Rabbi Roman responded to a questioner who asked about follow-up studies of persons who were converted or partners in mixed marriages. He said many studies were now being con- ducted "but I can't quote the figures yet." Rabbi Kirshner agreed with Rabbi Schindler that the Jewish community should be au- gmented after the Holocaust. "But we can't just do it any old way," he said. Referring to patrilineal des- cent, he added, "Do we now give up a 2,000-year tradition (mat- rilineal descent) for something that may have a . negative re- sult? We don't know how it will work,. or what it will accom- plish." Rabbi Roman repeated that patrilineal descent is not an automatic bestowal of Jewish status. "It must be earned through actions." He said he would be happy to see his con- gregation keep kosher, which brought jokes and smiles from the audience. "But why just apply standards to converts?" he asked. "Why not to our board members, to our congregants?" Jews For Jesus Reveal Anti-Semitic Stance Baltimore — Internal docu- ments recently obtained from the "Jews for Jesus" missionary organization reveal a pattern of media manipulation and anti- Jewish hostility which has been skillfully hidden from public view, according to Jews for Judaism, a national countermis- sionary organization with offices in Baltimore and Los Angeles. "Jews for Jesus" is a California-based Christian evangelical group whose aggres- sive techniques and utlization of Jewish symbols have provoked the ire of both Jewish and Christian leaders and laity. In a confidential report bearing the notation, "Not to be Distributed to Non-Christians," Jews for Jesus defines itself as "evangeli- cal fundamentalists ... an arm of the local Church." "The documents we have re- ceived, including extensive min- utes from meetings of the Jews for Jesus National Council, make clear that this group is far more sophisticated, cult-like, and anti-Semitic than anyone had imagined," asserted. Lawr- ence Levey, east coast director of Jews for Judaism. In support of this claim, Levey cited the following statements by Jews for Jesus founder Martin "Moishe," Rosen, statements which Levey alleges were made to Jews for Jesus Council and staff mem- bers in "closed door" sessions:: • On Judaism: "We have waited too long to teach that Judaism is a false religion. "To be Jewish, to be really Jewish, is to feel guilty." • On Jewish Orthodoxy: "Or- thodox Judaism is darkness and superstition." • On "Hebrew Christianity": "The fact is that we are not practicing any form of Judaism. We are practicing Christianity. That is our religion. • .0n Ecumenical Dialogue: "Dialogue with unbelievers is neither necessary nor possible." • On Memorializing the Holocaust: "The general Gentile public is tired of hearing about the Holocaust. Yet the Jewish establihsment persists in keep- ing this before the public." • On Media Manipulation: "When participating in a call-in radio program, do your homework. Set things up care- fully by having people call in with a question that you want to answer ... They should not call in too early or the people who screen calls may suspect that it is set up and they won't let the call through." "Before an interview, go over the Jews for Jesus answers. Have it memorized Get in our current party line." "Moishe, asked the Council to let him handle the level and in- tensity of propaganda. Ire knows who to raise and lower the level of propaganda in an uncanny way." "The current party line is 'Judaism is a false religion.' After making such a statement, keep ameliorating it by saying how much you love the Jewish people." • On Intentional Provocation: "We are trying to provoke the Jewish community into interac- tion. We cannot 'woo' them with our pro-Israel stance or our ,Jewishness. Instead, we accuse them of something to get them ' to. interact."
