some of his Reform colleagues
who married mixed couples
without conversion." "But who
are we to turn away someone
who says, 'I want to be with
you.' If Judaism is a series of
conscious choices than we can't
turn that. person down."
"I will try to teach, to share,
to encourage their participation
in the ritual requirements (of
conversion)" Rabbi Roman said,
"but I can't demand. That's be-
tween the individual Jew and
his or her God."
Although Jews in Great Brit-
ain, France and Australia are in
far more serious trouble than
the Jewish community in the
United States, Rabbi Roman
said, "we are also facing a crisis.
Only 60 percent of our people af-
filiate" with a synagogue or
temple. "But the definition of

Rabbi Roman asked if it
would now be proper for him to
give a list of his converts to Or-
thodox rabbis, marking off
which converts had gone to the
mikveh and which ones had
been circumcised. Although
these converts have been .living
as Jews for , many years, their
status is now being questioned.
Stating that he does not be-
lieve in "quicky" conversions,
nevertheless Rabbi Roman de-
fended the converts who became
Jewish through such practices.
"These people honestly believe
that they are Jewish. How do
we come along years later and
say to them that they are not?"
The Reform rabbis will re-
consider their 1983 decision on
patrilineal descent at their na-
tional meeting in June. But
Rabbi Roman doubted that the
1983 policy would be rescinded.
"It is cot a justification for
mixed marriage, which is not a
policy, intent, or procedure of
Reform. But patrilineal descent
is an attempted response to
reality."
He gave 'an example of a
couple who go through divorce:
the father is Jewish, the mother
gentile, and the children have
been raised Jewish. "Patrilineal
descent in this case gives a
