Israeli Cargo
Ship Detained
By Greece

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A mystery
is developing around a small,
cargo ship of obscure registry,
said to be Israeli-owned, which
was seized by the Greek coast
' Guard off Eastern Crete last
week and alleged to be smuggl-
ing arms from Israel to an un-
specified destination.
The ship's Master, Capt.
ylassis Tzivitzis, who is Greek,
and her chief mate, Leidef Ot-
, mar, identified as Austrian,
were detained at the Cretan port
of Aghios Nicalaos. The crew,
said to consist of seven Turks
and three Filipinos, was con-
fined to the vessel.
Greek sources said the ship
was carrying 280 tons of ammu-
nition and explosives, 25 Israel-
made Uzi submachine guns and
a dismantled Italian-made
Augusta Be! 212 helicopter. Ac-
cording to the sources, the
vessel is owned by a Haifa-based
company.
This ship, Sea Lion, sailed
from Haifa early in March and
called at a Turkish port before
heading west. She was spotted
by the Greek Coast Guard at an-
chor in Cretan waters where her
crew allegedly was painting out
the ship's name.
Reports from Athens said the
Cargo was destined for portugal
and Guatemala. Greek law for-
bids the transportation of arms
and ammunition through Greek
waters without a special license.

Montevideo (JTA) — Foreign
Minister Enrique Iglisias con-
firmed that President Jose
Maria Sanguinetti will visit
Israel next month and will also

The Foreign Minister, who

.. thly speakers foruM of the year,
assured his audience that his na-
tion will not alter its friendship
with Israel despite the fact that
Uruguay will open up to the
Third. World.
Iglisias, a noted economist
who for many years has served
as executive head of the Eco-
nomic Commission for • Latin
America of the United Nations,
,explained that Uruguay and
In other Latin American countries
:f.1 had to begin "establishing rela-
tionships and doing business
.with all nations" if they were to
,solve their economic crisis.
'But," he emphasized, "this
does not mean that there is even
„;tie slightest change in our tradi-
tonal friendship with Israel."
