Dr. Ruth
Continued from preceding page
It's because of the need in our
society."
Has all of her advice-giving
done anything for her own sex
life? (Dr. Westheimer has been
married to Fred Westheimer, an
engineer and her third husband,
for 24 years and has two chil-
dren, Miriam, 29 and Joel, 22).
"It has improved my skill,"
she said with a mischievous
giggle "Because all that I say
about taking risks and letting
yourself go and various body
movements, certainly has helped
my skill."
(In . an impish aside during a
recent speech, Dr. Westheimer
said that she never lets her
husband attend her lectures, be-
cause he would be sure, during
the question-and-answer session,
to get up and say, "Don't listen
to this woman. She's all talk.")
Dr. Westheimer is frankly de-
lighted with the success of her
radio talk show, which was re-
cently sold on a syndicated basis
to the Armed Forces Network
and 30 other markets. And her
standard fee for speaking
engagements is $18,000. She
likes the money, and "it's lots of
fun to have the hairdresser, the
clothes, the limousines." The
only thing that bothers her is
that when she goes skiing,
people call to her from the chair
lifts, and she knows that if she
looks up and waves, she will
fall. So she just goes right on
skiing.
It's all very exciting, but
when all the hoopla is over, Dr.
Westheimer will be in control.
"I'm very realistic," she said.
"I have two feet on the ground. I
never would give up my private

I never would give up
my university affiliations. I'd
cut down on certain things, be-
cause I can't teach a regular
semester.
"But I do know that after a
while the radio and television
people are going to say, 'Thank
you very much and goodbye.'
Then I'm going to do what I did
before. I'm going to continue my
private practice and I'm going to
do lecturing. I'll probably look
for a university affiliation."

Demjanjuk Remanded
Into Custody By Court
Tel Aviv (JTA) — John Dem-
janjuk last week was ordered
remanded in custody for a fur-
ther 15 days by Jerusalem Chief
Magistrate Aharon Simcha, sit-
ting in a make-shift courtroom
at the Ayalon prison.
Demjanjuk, the former Ukrai-
nian extradicted to Israel from
the U.S. a month ago, is sus-
pected of being the notorious
Ivan the Terrible, one the
cruelest officials at the
Treblinka death camp.
The judge said that there was
sufficient evidence to warrant
holding the accused in prison
pending his trial.
His statement came after he
had asked police prosecutor
Alex Ish-Shalom to comment on
news reports that Ivan the Ter-
rible had been killed during a
prison inmate uprising in
Treblinka.
The police official described
the reports as imaginary, saying
that no single person had come
forward with proof that he him-
self had taken part in Ivan's kill-
ing or had been an actual eye-
witness. "It's all hearsay
evidence — and we have ade-
quate proof to the contrary —
that Demjanjuk is indeed the
notorious Ivan," he said.
Demjanjuk, asked if he had
anything to say, protested that
the proceedings were being car-
ried out in Hebrew, and he had
to reply on interpretation. The
judge promised him that a trans-
lation of the full transcript of the
proceedings would be made
available to his attorney.
Demjanjuk's American at-
torney, Mark O'Connel was pre-
sent in the court but did not
take part in the hearing, as he
has not yet received permission
to plead before an Israeli court,
The Israel bar association has
agreed to O'Connel's active ap-
pearance in court in view of his
lengthy service for his client
before the U.S. courts, and the
fact that it might be difficult to
find an experienced Israeli
lawyer ready to defend the man
charged with war crimes against
Jews.
The Justice Ministry is to act
shortly on O'Connel's request to
represent his client in court.
