Stirs Local Forum The Midrasha's Unity series led off with traditional and Reform viewpoints on conversion and patrilineal descent. BY ALAN HITSKY News Editor Although they changed few minds, Rabbi Stanley Kirshner of Cong. B'nai Israel of West Bloom- field and Rabbi Norman Roman of Temple Beth El did an admirable job Monday evening presenting opposing viewpoints on the issue of "Conver- sion and Patrilineal Descent." The two local rabbis were the lead-off speakers in the three-part series on "Unity Within Diversity: Restoring Dialogue Within the Jewish Community," being spon- sored by the Midrasha - College of Jewish Studies. Rabbi Kirshner led off the dis- cussion by explaining the traditional conversion process. He added that many biblical heroes, including Ab- raham, were converts, and reminded the audience that Joseph, Moses and Joshua married .non-Jews. "There was much intermarriage during our bondage in Egypt, but there is no biblical discussion of problems or 'V" Continued on Page 22 Broomfield Pushes Soviet Emigration The Birmingham legislator will present a list of 35 refuSeniks to Russian authorities this week. Staff Report Rep. William Broomfield (R- Birmingham) will attempt to gain the release of 12 Soviet Jewish families this week during a week- long visit to the Soviet Union. Accompanied by Rep. Dante Fascell Broomfield will try to give the list of 35 names to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, in a ges- ture similar to one that was mak by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.); in January. • Fascall and Broomfield are the ranking members of the House Fgreign Affairs Committee from their respective parties. They said before leaving the United States this week that they would raise human rights issues with Soviet leaders. According to Bill Graham of the Friends of the. Soviet Jewry Educa- tion and Information Center, the list of names was compiled by Sherwin Tukel of the Detroit District of the Zionist Organization of America, Jeannie Weiner of the Detroit Soviet Jewry Committee of the Jewish Community Council, and Rae Sharfman of the Friends group. Graham said the families were chosen from a general list, rather than because of ties to Michigan, be- cause Broomfield and Fascell are re- presenting the Foreign Affairs Committee and. not just their respec- tive states.
