B. Malamud

Bernard Malamud

New York — Bernard
Malamud, author of the Pulitzer
Prize winning The Fixer, and 11
other novels including The
Assistant and The Natural, died
last week in New York at age
71.
Malamud wrote four collec-
tions of short stories, and The
Magic Barrel collection in 1959
won the National Book Award.
The Natural, first published
in 1952 about a baseball player
whose life portrays the Ameri-
can dream, was made into a
successful 1984 movie starring
Robert Redford.

Jack Ellstein

Jack Ellstein, 84, retired
executive director of the Dry
Cleaners Institute, died March
23.
Mr. Ellstein was a member of
Cong. B'nai Moshe, Crescent
Shrine Club, Craftsman Lodge
of the Masons, Hannah Schloss
Oldtimers. He was a former
state representative and vice
president of the Political Action
Committee of the -Amalgamated
Clothing Workers of America.
He leaves his wife, Geraldine;
two daughters, Mrs. Edward
(Lila) Rader of Pasadena, Calif.,
and Mrs. Lester • (Marcia)
Weiner; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie
Cohen and Mrs. Wallace (Eve)
Fein; a brother, Irving; five
grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.

S. Malinowski

Stefania Malinowski, 77, of
West Bloomfield, a Polish attor-
ney who was a survivor of the
Warsaw Ghetto, died March 23.
She and her husband prac-
ticed law in Warsaw. Her hus-
band died in the ghetto, but
Mrs. Malinowski managed to es-
cape with her son. She came to
the U.S. from Warsaw in 1969.
She is survived by her son,
Dr. Edward; a sister, Mrs.
Janina Kohn-Krajewska; and
one granddaughter.
