Lawrence joined the Detroit
Free Press in 1978 as executive
editor and assumed the position
of publisher and chairman in
1985.
He is a director of the Ameri-
can Society of Newspaper
Editors and chairs its credibility
committee. He serves on the
boards of numerous community
and cultural organizations, in-
cluding the Founders Society/
Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit
Renaissance, the Michigan
Council for the Arts and of the
Michigan Thanksgiving Parade
Foundation.
The Institute of Human Rela-
tions was created by the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee to serve
as a research center for inter-
group and interreligious affairs.
