Cohn, who introduced the Hon-
oree, both described the princi-
ples, duties and functions of the
Vaad.
Borman said that "society's
commitment to the 'pleasure
principle' had distorted much of
our thinking." The Vaad is a
group representing the backbone
of Jewish existence, he said,
and, in an atmosphere of reli-
gious experience, Judaism will
thrive.
Judge Cohn said that before
1930, chaos and confusion re-
sulted from a lack of control
over Judaism. Each rabbi was
his own council. The Vaad was
begun in 1930 with three pur-
poses in mind: to strengthen
Jewish Life and to become an
authoritative force for tradi-
tional Judaism, to create a fed-
eration of Orthodox synagogues
to preserve the Jewish ritual,
and to assure that the local
kashruth certification would
come from a central source.
Rabbi Leizer Levin, president
of the council, compared
Judaism to medicine. Liquid
medicine, he said, which is
taken without first shaking the
bottle, is mostly water. It is the
same with Judaism, he said.
Without the full strength of tra-
dition, Jewish observance is also
mostly water.
The American and Israeli an-
thems were sung by Cantor
Seymour Greenstein, the
hamotzi was chanted by Morris
Flatt, and the Birkat Hamazon
by Rabbi Naftali Deutsch.

$4 Million
For Boys Town

Jerusalem — An international
mission of Boys Town Jerusalem
leaders will dedicate more than
$4,075,000 in educational
facilities and programs at Boys
.Town's College of Applied
Engineering this May on the
eight-school residential center's
18-acre campus.
The mission will also salute
the U.S. Government for award-
ing $1,350,000 in grants for the
College through the Agency for
International Development.

University's Project SAGES,
which bridges the generation gap
by providing education to the
young through their service to the
old, has entered its second year.
SAGES, an acronym for
Strengthening Another Genera-
tion Through Education and Serv-
ice, matches students at Yeshiva's
high school, college, and rabbini-
cal school with elderly peoplelor
weekly visits.
