"The murderers are the enemies
of peace," spokesman Larry
Speakes at the White House.
"Terrorists have claimed
many victims, both Palestinian
and Israeli, in an effort to in-
timidate those who want peace
and accommodation," he said.
"They must not be allowed to
succeed. We condemn the mur-
der in the strongest terms. We
extend our sympathy to the el-
Masri family and to the people
of Nablus."
Speakes said that el-Masri
"was a leader of stature and in-
tegrity. He was dedicated to a
better future for the citizens of
Nablus and, in a wider sense, for
the Palestinian people."
At the State Department,
spokesman Charles Redman
also read a lengthy statement
condemning the murder. "Those
who killed him would deny the
Palestinians a peaceful solution
to their problems and have dealt
a blow to the Palestinian com-
munity." He called them
"enemies of peace."
Redman continued, "Through
this cowardly act and others like
it, terrorists seek to intimidate

those who work for a settlement
whereby Palestinians and
Israelis would achieve peace and
recognition of each other's
legitiamte rights and aspira-
tions.
"Peace and reconciliation are
critical to the future and well-
being of both the Palestinian
and Israeli people. The vast ma-
jority of both support this cause
and oppose those who practice
violence and extremism. A great
many individuals of courage and
good will in both communities
are working for peace. The tra-
gic killing of Zafer el-Masri must
not deter their efforts. Others
must follow the example of el-
Masri's courage so that all can
realize his dream of a peaceful
future."
Redman, in response to ques-
tioning, expressed hope that the
peace process might still move
forward despite the assassina-
tion. He also appepred to en-
dorse Prime Minister Shimon
Peres's most recent unilateral
efforts to extend some more
day-to-day authority in all sorts
of areas to the West Bank and
Gaza Palestinians.
