Rabbi Max Kapustin
The First Max Kapustin
Memorial Symposium is
scheduled to take place on
Thursday, at 3:30 p.m. in
Wayne State's Manoogian Hall.
Paula Sanders of Harvard Uni-
versity will speak on "The Is-
lamic Environment of
Maimonides."
At 8 p.m., Joel Kraemer of Tel
Aviv University will speak in
LaMed Auditorium of the
United Hebrew Schools Sig-
mund and Sophie Rolik building
on "Towards a Biography of
Maimonides."
The symposium is a joint proj-
ect of the Near Eastern Studies
Department of Wayne State
University, the Midtasha Col-
lege of Jewish Studies, and the
B'nai Hillel Foundation at
Wayne State University. The
first year of the symposium is
partially funded by the Michi-
gan Endowment for the
Humanities.
Rabbi Kapustin was the direc-
tor of the B'nai B'rith Hillel
Foundation at WSU from 1948
to 1976. Born near Frankfurt,
Germany, Rabbi Kapustin was
ordained at Hildesheimer Rab-
binical Seminary of Berlin. He
received a doctorate in Semitics
from Heidelberg University. He
was an instructor of Bible and
Talmud at the rabbinical college
of Hoffman Yeshivah in
Frankfurt-am-Main.
He came to the United States
in 1938 and held a pulpit in
Dannville, Va., froin 1938 to
1948, when he took the WSU
post. He retired in 1976. Rabbi
Kapustin was an adjunct profes-
sor of German and Near East
Studies for 35 years while at
WSU.
Rabbi Kapustin was a
member of the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis. He sat on the
executive committee of the
Jewish Community Council and
was affiliated with the Detroit
Round Table of the •National
Conference of Christians and
Jews.
Rabbi- Kapustin was a founder
of Akiva Hebrew Day School
with Rabbi James I. Gordon and
the late Rabbi Hayim Donin. He
also was president of the Akiva
board of education. He was a
36-year member of Co:ing. Beth
Tefilo Emanuel. Tikvah of which
he was a past president. -
He served on the board of
yeshivah Beth Yehudah, was a

Chasodim and taught at the
Midrasha-College of Jewish
Studies.
Ms. Sanders was educated at
Princeton University. During
her doctoral studies she served
as research assistant to the late
Prof. S.D. Goitein, the leading
scholar in the field of Judeo-
islamic civilization. Prof. San-
ders teaches in the history de-
partment of Harvard University
and in addition to her research
in Islamic history, she is cur-
rently preparing the last of Goi-
tein's works for publication.
A graduate of the Jewish
Theological Seminary, Kraemer
received his Ph.D. degree from
Yale University. After teaching
at the seminary and Yale, he
accepted a position in the de-
partment of Middle East history
at Tel Aviv University. More re-
cently he was chairman of that
department. Currently, _ he is
visiting professor of Judaic
studies at San Diego State Uni-
versity. Prof. Kraemer, who has
written extensively on Islamic
and Judaic topics, is now pre-
paring' a major study of
Miamonides and his Islamic
milieu.
Maimonides, who was born in
Cordova, Spain, •spent most of
his adult life in Fostat, the old
city of Cairo, Egypt. He wrote
major works in the fields of phi-
losophy, medicine and Jewish
law.

Terrorism Topic
Of Seminar

The Union of Students for Is-
rael and the Progressive Zionist
Caucus will bring a specialist on
international relations, Carlo
Rizowy, to Ann Arbor for a
two-day seminar entitled: "Ter-
rorism as an Obstacle to Peace."
The seminar will take place at
the Hillel Foundation, 1429 Hill
St., beginning April 4 at 9:15
p.m. with a lecture entitled:
"Framework for Study of the
Middle East Conflict: Introduc-
tion to Terrorism ih the Middle
East."
The April 5 sessions will in-
clude: "The Role of Terrorism in
the. Middle East" at 1 p.m. and
"Israel, the PLO, and the Pales-
tinians" at 3 p.m. All are wel-
come free of charge.
The son of Holocaust sur-
vivors, Dr. Rizowy •is a practic-
ing attorney in Chicago. Born in
Uruguay, Dr. Rizowy moved to
Israel, where he obtained a B.A.
degree in international relations
and political. science. Dr. Rizowy
is fluent in seven languages.
He has lectured extensively
throughout the United States,
South America, and Europe on
legal and 'political issues and on
issues concerning world Jewry.
He has been a guest on several
national and cable. TV pro-
grams. He is a regular political
analyst on National Public
Radio on issues of political vio-
lence.
He has master's and Ph.D de-
grees in, international relations
from the University of Chicago.
He 'holds a degree in law from
