DETROIT

Overlooking the Riverfront at Cobo Hall

BACK IN 1953, JOE COR-
NELL held his first dance
competition at Holiday Manor
on Wyoming . About 150
people attended.
Last week, at Michigan Inn,
Joe Cornell's Spring Ball &
Dante Competition had its 33rd
Annual ... with attendance well
over 600 soreaming youngsters,
parents, aunts, uncles, grand-
parents and friends.
Joe is the Dick Clark of
dancedom ... he never seems to
grow old ... still looks great ...
The kids call him "Uncle Joe"
... and former students ask if
he'd like to see their wedding
pictures or photos of their chil-
dren.
He has spanned the genera-
tion gap with wonderful grace
... and while out on the floor
doing a dance exhibition with
three of his teachers, later
asked, "Have I slowed down
much?" ... The answer is NO
WAY! ... And he's still the ex-
pert of experts in front of the
microphone, handling it as if the
mike were a part of him ... re-
peatedly asking the huge crowd,
"What number do you like?" ...
with answers galore screeching
from one end of the ballroom to
another.
The almost perennial band of
Jerry Ross and Simone Vitale
was wonderful as usual ... with
Jeanne Vitale and her excellent
vocalizing an annual listen-to
treat.
Joe and wife Kathy bounce
back and forth from here and
Sherman Oaks, Calif. ... His
local staff is made up of Sandy
Richards, Robert Fink, Debby
Moran, Missy Warnick, Steve
Nakisher, Rebecca Jasgur,
Stever Jasgur and Bob Bonnell.
Following grand march with
about 300 contestants came pre-
liminary heats one and two in
fox trot, cha-cha and rock and
roll ... then general dancing ...
with mobile music by Joe's
"Party Perker Uppers" Ken
• Harris, Rick Lederman, Ron
Lederman, Bill Goldstein, Eric
Gould, Rob Goldstein, Steve
Wolf and Mike Garfinkel.
Free-style dance 'contest was
open to all Joe Cornell dance
students ... and then came the
finals ... with judging by all
former Joe Cornell students .. ,
and winners themselves , Ken
Harris, Jeff Milgrom, Steve
Wolf, Julie Levinson, Suzi
Stewart, Sharon Eaton, Marcy
Shulman, Laurie Nedelman and
Mike Garfinkel.
Presentation of awards were
by the 1985 dance champions
.. Stacey Lakind, Jeff Turken,
Jessica Rolnick, Marc Nakisher,
Dana Savas and Corbin Bell.
Six winning couples were cho-
sen this year from about 39
in the overall dance' competition
▪ And the winners were ...
Michelle Dorfman and Jonathan
Bruss, first place . .. Missy, Lei-
ter and Brian Golding, second
• . Amy Opperer and. Marc Gil-
lens, third ... Nicole Miller and
Eric Pevzner, fourth ... Naomi
Berlin and Seth Jackier, fifth
• Slyssa Lovinger and Jason
Miller, sixth.
Win or lose,. the kids, have
•

such a good time at these Spring
Balls by Joe Cornell ...
"Thanks, Uncle Joe" so many
say as they kiss him hello and
goodnight.
Joe Cornell still lives the life
he's always known ... making
others happy.
THIRD COOKBOOK by
Centennial Chapter, B'nai B'rith
Women, is finally out ... after
being worked on for six years
... called We're Cooking Again.
Four women worked on all
three cookbooks ... Barbara
Coden, Ruthe Goldstein, Sally
Lippitt and Ellen Gruskin.
Barbara Coden, co-chairgal
this year with Barbara Sokolov,
was also chairlassie of book
number two, We're Still Cooking
. . . The chairgal of Centennial's
first cookbook, Here's What's
Cooking, was Faye Leshman,
now living in Akron, Qhio.
The group's third book in-
cludes 650 recipes from 62 con-
tributing members ... plus "all
our daughters, sons, mothers,
mothers-in-law, sisters, lantes',
`bubies', advisers and friends."
It is an interesting book that
looks like a lot of hard work ...
Many of the recipes are not
found in other cookbooks I have
seen.
Passover and traditional dis ;
hes are includede ... plus dips,
appetizers, soups, beverages,
fish, eggs, casseroles, meats,
poultry, vegetables, side dishes,
salads, molds, dressings, breads,
rolls, muffins, desserts and
baked goods.
It is so diversified that there's
even the making of bagels ...
Also so many exciting dishes
that homemakers will love to
try.... T.he recipes are very
simple and a number of them
even stand upon the adventur-
ous side.
Besides the many outstanding
recipes in Centennial's third
cookbook ... are tab guides for
all sections . : . with back infor-
mation that includes ... mic-
rowave hints, meat roasting and
poultry roasting guides, hints to
remember when buying vegeta-
bles, food quantities needed for
large servings (25, 50 and 100),
equivalent chart, substitutions
for missing ingredients, general
oven chart, contents of cans, pie
and dessert food quantities be-
fore and after their preparation,
chart of kitchen math and help-
ful hints from Centennial cooks.
All illustrations in the spiral
bound We're Cooking Again
were done by talented .member
Jackier Remer .'.. Gloria
Krause is president of the
group.
The first two cookbooks by
Centennial Chapter, B'nai B'rith
Women were sellouts ... and
from the looks 'of the group's
newest one, they won't be
around long either.
We're Cooking Again sells for
a well-worth-it and werthwhile
$16 donation toward BB Women
philanthropie's ... To obtain the
book, contact Barhara Coden,
358-3983, or Barbara Sokolov,
353-5350.

... and been in business since
early 1950s.

tion in Warren will open this
April ... Main offices are at the
Southfield locale.
Former Howard Johnson's,
now Vern Haney's, has been
remodeled inside ... and will
soon undergo an exterior' face
change.
WOULD YOU BELIEVE
there are over 80 different
kosher wines and champagnes
on the market? ... The kosher
whites and reds have taken off
like frightened bumblebees as
people begin learning of them
... The wines are not solely
kosher for Passover ... but im-
bibed all year.
Recent wine tasting by Raskin
Food Co., exclusive distributor
of Kedem Wine Co., revealed
some beauties ... Kedem has 45
varieties from all wine produc-
ing countries ... plus seven cor-
dials made in Israel and Yugos-
lavia. •
It has gotten so big that
Kedem took over a winery in
California ... to produce and
bottle the wines ... There's
even a kosher wine from Corn-
munist Hungary.
One of the favorites is Bar-
tenura Royal 18 (18 is Chai in
Hebrew) ... semi-sweet with a
rich aroma ... The Baron Her-
zog (named after Kedem foun-
der) line is outstanding ... Its
Chardonnay white wine offers
much character, distinct varietal
flavor and complexity ... Its
Chenin Blanc is a slightly
sweet, crisp white wine with
nice balance ... Baron Herzog
white Zinfandel is a semi-dry,
medium bodied, full flavored
versatile pink table wine ... An
elegant Baron Herzog Cabernet
Sauvignon full, 'rich wine of
marked elegance will be avail-
able in 1987 ... All these are
California products . A Baron
Herzog red Bordeaux Superior is
rated among the finest of kosher
wines ... as are the chateaus of
France ... Leading wine experts
rate Bartenura Asti Spumanti
the best asti ... Another favo-
rite is the Bartenura Lam-
brusco, a soft, fruity red wine
with a slight effervescence ...
Alsace Reisling is a clean, crisp,
dry, full-flavored table wine.
It is most interesting about an
Israeli wine such as Gamla
Sauvignon Blanc, with its dry
light, clean, crisp, elegant
example of variental.
When the Syrians occupied
Goldan Heights, they, were too
busy sniping at Israelis to
realize the rich' soil upon Which
they stood ... When the. Israelis '
took over the Golan Heights,
i zed its fi ne soil to
they wine.
