Women's business wear has
freer guidelines than that of men.
Suits, dresses and even trousers
are all accepted in some work
situations.
"My feeling is that it's a
combination of everything this
spring in women's fashions,"
explained Ray Epstein of Ray &
Ida's in Southfield and Oak Park.
"My customers like long and
easy," Epstein said. "The very
young women with great figures
will wear fitted clothes. For
business it's more basic clothes,
like the Harve Benard look. Basic
but padded rounded shoulders
and double breasted. Updated,
but basic."
Sandy Sampson, owner of
Threads, in Southfield, said that
versatile dressing is the key to her
customer's business dressing
needs. "Two-piece dressing is
just right for working gals,"
Sampson said. "They can put a
blazer over it and make it real
business-like. We emphasize
stretching the wardrobe.
Scarves, jewelry and pins can
really dress up an outfit while
blazers can make it more
business-like."
Best purchases in a woman's
business wardrobe are those that
can go with more than one other
matched piece. "If you buy a
jacket it doesn't have to go with
just one thing, you can make
yourself six outfits," Epstein said.
These versatile clothes come
in a variety of textures and colors
for spring. Women's business
wear goes from synthetic
machine-wash fabrics for the
more casual cost-conscious, to
high quality natural fabrics for the
more traditional professional.
The Claymore Lioness shop in
Birmingham specializes in the
very conservative in women's
dressing. According to Beth
Phillips, store manager, a
woman's wardrobe will vary
depending on her job.
"The dark grays are good for
bankers, accountants and
stockbrokers," Phillips stated.
