which is a little oversized, and
matching pants with a shirt like
the one worn in the television
show.
Putting together a casual look
in 1986 is not an easy task.
According to New Generation's
Stalburg, "All this casual look the
girls are wearing takes a lot of
thought. They are making a
statement with it. You have to
have the right socks to go over
the tight ribbed pants and
something to go with the oversize
top."
Jeans are still around
some
things are permanent but there
are differences: — printed jeans,
and some that are twill, along with
plain denims, for the spring and
summer. And yes, there'll even
be some in pastels.
What do girls wear with this big,
unconstructed style, with all the
layers and all the colors?
Accessories, and plenty of them!
They are buying all kinds of
wild socks, big floppy ankle socks
made of cotton. Big watches.
Jewelry where bigger means
better. And apparently more is
better, too. The girls like
combinations of necklaces,
rhinestone pins, bigger fancier
earrings. Long pearls are
definitely an item of importance,
along with gaudy neckaces some
of which even have fruit (fake)
hanging from them.
Boys seem to come in two
groups. At least that's what Marc
Shindler, manager and an owner
of Brody's Boys' and Young
Mens' Wear in West Bloomfield,
believes. He says, "There are
those who'll wear the wild Jams
stuff, and those who want a plain
basic look. It's either punky or
preppy."
Just as for the girls, the warmer
temperatures for the boys means
lots of color and comfort. The
biggest sellers are the Jams
outfits, with their wild flowered
shorts and matching shirts.
Many boys, of course, wouldn't
wear these splashy, bright colors,
