splashes of color, the other with pastels. Throw
in a generous handful of fruit, vegetables, and
flowers, and you have the rough outline of a paint-
ing of spring and summer as seen through the eyes of
a child — at least as they are represented in the child's
clothing.
The warmer weather this year will bring with it a delightful
array of colors, both brights and pastels, like a celebration of
the sunshine.
The trend to be seen in the Detroit area in children's wear is
toward the casual, with a touch of the dressier casual. For girls
there are lots of bright prints of fruits, of vegetables and florals.
Pastels are playing a role, too. Oversized T-shirts worn over
tight-ribbed pants are a definite winner in the young girl's
wardrobe.
Boys too are going to be visible as they sport the Jams look
with its flashy prints, or as they make a statement in their
Izods, and Miami Vice outfits.
The el:n15Tiaigill-Derioit arda stores is on comfort and fun.
The clothes are colorful and roomy. Robin Best, manager of
the teens' department at Jacobson's in Birmingham, says
"The girls like a lot of color and even though a lot of the ladies'
things are going to be on a slimmer line, the girls still want the
oversize look. And we'll be seeing a lot of yellow this year.
Thelma Stalburg, one of the owners of New Generation in
Southfield, agrees with this, and adds, "Girls are either going
into the brights, primary brights or the secondary colors — the
hot pinks, aqua, all those colors are extremely popular."
Stalburg says there are "certain names they love — I.D. for
Kids, for example, is selling very well, They are big and
oversized items. The look is just comfortable, layered and
put-together."
As well as the oversized look there's the Jams-look. These
clothes are variations on the boys' clothes (when the girls
aren't wearing the boys' clothes) and include a longer pair of
shorts than has been around in several years.
Short shorts are dead! The new ones are similar to boys'
underwear shorts, but are longer — like short pajamas and
