Little Flirts

top craze, clothes are coming in
much closer to the body," notes
Yvette Glover, manager of Rave
at Northland. Rubin agrees.
"Teens aren't looking for fullness.
Everything points towards a
slender look."
Up on top, florals are losing
ground to abstract prints, but are
still highly visible in the stores.
"Stripes are also in, and a few
animal prints," noted Glover. "But
abstracts are the biggest." There
will be fewer cabbage roses this
summer, and no paisley, but lots
of squiggles and scribbles. And
fruit — bananas, cherries,
oranges and apples worked into
patterns.
Another popular decoration for
shirts this season will be studs
and rhinestones, according to
Rubin. They are most effective on
bleached, lightweight denim
shirts.
Hats are hot! According to The
Limited, the 14 to 19 set is
wearing hats now. Soft slouches
in neutrals or pastels are the
latest trends for teens. The
Alcove in Northland also
recommends belts and other
accessories. "Accessories of all
kinds are very important," Glover
points out. "They can really make
or break an outfit."
Spring will come in many colors
this year, with college students
leaning towards Miami Vice type
pastels. Mint is making a fashion
splash, followed closely by baby
blue, lemon yellow, cotton candy
pink, peach and lavender. Junior
high and high schoolers are
moving more towards the bright
primary hues — splashes of red,
yellow and royal blue. In neutrals,
khaki is The Limited's choice for
spring, while Rave stresses
sharp black and white prints.
