eens all over the country are standing their ground against winter and preparing for spring. En masse, they are migrating to the shopping malls; they are shredding their wooly coats and restocking their closets. Like crocuses, they're popping up all over, dressed for spring fancies. Oversized tops and skinny leggings are still very much in, with wool sweaters being replaced by cotton and sweatshirts disappearing to make way for the thinner fleece. As usual, cotton is the big favorite for spring because of it's comfort 11 and versatility, but beware! "You have to be careful with cotton sweaters," cautions Chani Goldman, who sells hand-knit Barak sweaters. "They stretch out of shape fairly quickly. If the sweater is 100 percent cotton, you can have it reshaped or reshape it yourself. But if there's any rayon in it, you can kiss it goodbye." Denim, the uniform of the teen and college set, is still a mainstay. Print and floral jeans have literally faded out — summer denim is bleached to a soft baby blue, and the operative word in denim jeans is Guess. Another trendy name: Levi's 501 button-down jeans. Left to Right: Cropped jacket and zip- front mini-skirt, both in denim, and teamed with a ribbed, knit turtle- neck. From Lizwear, by Liz Claiborne. Canvas striped boxy jacket, lace camisole, lace square dance skirt and denim prairie skirt mixes the rugged and the romantic. From Lizwear.
