kits together at another.
Sparsely furnished in fold-up
chairs and bridge tables, this
showroom has an intense aura
about it which explains how
Donna Karan's line has
catapulted to the top in such a
short time.
Her summer line hangs on
the far wall, with red, black
and white bodysuits — her
trademark style — draped
from a black wire wall unit. On
the opposite wall, her
accessories are lined up next
to a gigantic VCR unit which
offers tapes of her various
collections to visiting buyers.
The pace is constant, the
attitude serious. Yet there is a
feeling of family and of mutual
goals, with one busy
saleswoman bringing another
a diet Coke and two other
workers helping the Broadway
star of "Song and Dance,"
Bernadette Peters, as she flips
through books of the fall line
and places her orders.
"It is such a team effort,"
says Beth. "I can turn around
to anyone and say, 'I need
your help.' There's no one
who will ever walk out when
their job is done. We all do
more than one job. No one
does a 9 to 5 thing. The
official hours are 9 to 5:30 with
an hour for lunch, which is
amusing to us all."
The hard work has produced
results. In one short year,
Donna Karan's staff turned
around from a three-person
operation to 50 workers who
made body conscious dressing
the hottest new trend in the
industry. But getting to that
status took more than a
showroom on Seventh Avenue.
It took constant awareness of
the changing trends and
understanding of every
intricate detail of working in
the garment industry.
"During the weeks before
the collection is shown, we're
under the gun and the pace is
extremely fast," says Beth.
