especially in engagement rings
and wedding bands, the
channel-set look is very big.
Instead of stones being held by
prongs, they are set into a
channel, which makes it look as if
the stone is floating.
Very popular in rings, he says,
are large, colored stones —
tourmaline (green); garnets (red);
rhodolite (pink); citrine (golden);
and peridot (light green). These
are being set in dinner and
cocktail rings; and the colors
seem to mimic the current fashion
shades, says Blair.
The chunky look
in a high
polished gold is also very
popular, said Blair. The stones
are "bezel-set," rather than with
prongs. This means that a ridge
of gold is placed around the edge
of the stone so that it looks as if it
is set directly into the gold, he
said.
Bruce Weiss, owner of Bruce
M. Weiss Jewelry in Southfield,
says that "We show more trendy
items than larger jewelry stores.
Contemporary, custom-designed
rings are very popular," he said.
Pendants are a popular item,
said Weiss. "We sell many
free-form customized looks in
14kt or 18 kt, all shiny gold, or in a
combination with a sandblasted
texture," he said.
Pearls are a classic that never
seem to go out of style. Blair says
"We're selling a lot of pearls
both cultured and fresh water.
They are either in plain strands,
or are also set with a major
colored stone surrounded by
diamonds."
Still very popular are "Pearl
Enhancers", an item that has
been seen for a couple of years,
says Blair. This is a pendant that
changes the look of plain pearls.
The pendant is either a cluster of
pearls, is set with a diamond or a
large stone, or is shown in a plain,
gold geometric shape. Clipped
over a string of pearls, or a wide
gold chain, it creates a major drop
in the center of your necklace, for
a different look, said Blair.
