Alan's Shoes, in Southfield,
Birmingham, and West
Bloomfield, says that "men are
starting to loosen up in their
dress. For casual dress, men are
now buying separate shoes to
wear with different outfits — just
as they've done with business
wear in the past." Bishop says
that "men are beginning to
accessorize their shoes to their
clothing. We don't just sell
shoes," he says, "we sell
accessories."
The television show, Miami
Vice, has made a tremendous
impact on men's clothes and
shoes this season. The Miami
Vice style offers a comfortable,
casual, unconstructed look to
shoes. "It's a fashion direction for
Middle America," says Dale
Maple, manager of Excalibur
Shoes in West Bloomfield. "It's a
style that has a wide range of
consumer interest — trendy, but
not too trendy."
The Zodiac moccasin is also
very popular, says Maple. It is
tri-toned in light grey, light pink,
and white; and the colors flow into
one another.
Another big seller at Excalibur
Shoes, is the aerobic-style shoe.
Mr. Alan's Shoes sells
multi-colored aerobic-style shoes
for a "bright, fun, summer look
that is not too offensive," says
Bishop.

IT'S IN THE BAG: A woman's
purse is extremely important to
her total fashion appearance. It
need not only be a catch-all for
necessities, but should also
make its own fashion statement.
Patty Kallen, owner of the
Handbag Gallery in Farmington
Hills, says "We've been seeing a
lot of bright colors, with lots of nail
heads and stones on the bags."
Big fashion colors this season
are yellow, fuschia, lime green,
and turquoise, she says. Of
course, white continues to remain
very big.
Textures are also big in purses,
and leather is sometimes
pleated.
