This year, her spring collection emphasizes fluid lines and shapes. Comfort and confidence are obvious design priorities. Thompson is currently using subtle greys, roses, seafoam and black in her tone-on-tone cotton silk and rayon urban- wear — primarily oversized tops and slimly proportioned bottoms. The aura of her designs is clean and elegant, but with a subtle restraint that yields to the strength of her favorite fabrics — cotton, jacquard, rayon matte jersey, silk and cotton blends, and metallic knits. Highlighting her current col- lection is a cropped tuxedo jacket, a pea coat made of embossed Swiss cotton and tone-on-tone raincoats. The separates include a slim button-back skirt, narrow-fitting sailor pants and metallic knit tank dresses. Jeweled sorority coats, lined in silver lame, feature letters from the Greek alphabet on a post-modern palette of coral, seafoam, dove grey and white linen. Consistent throughout is a solid foundation of details, such as a half-moon notch on shawl lapels and Thompson's signature ceramic buttons. The textural ceramic closures give the collection a unique and striking appeal. The com- bination of fabrics and distinc- tive buttons has proven so suc- cessful that a collection of ac- cessories was created about a year ago. Cleverly combining ceramic shapes with pearls,
