Miriam Haskell's showroom has a completely different feel from the electricity of a new designer's operation. Adorned with antique chairs and big mirrors, Haskell's showroom is quiet and serene with a sense of order and sturdiness that may reflect the 60-year-old operation. Several showcases are filled with the spring and summer line and when a buyer sits down behind a table, the boxes of jewelry are laid open for display and description. "We do not have consumers come up to our showrooms, much like fashion designers don't," says Angela. "We work with the buying offices, and mostly we work by appointment." Like the fashion industry, jewelry showrooms must work three to four months ahead of time. "The pace picks up and gets very exciting during market week," notes Angela. But a subdued atmosphere doesn't mean the staff is not constantly on the go searching out the new trends and styles. "We try to achieve a different look in the line," says Angela of their spring line which emphasizes grey tones, glass beads, filigree pins and detailed work. "There's a lot of competition out there, so we try to stand alone." In the fashion and jewelry industry, there is a constant need for each designer to find his or her own individual style, something which all feel New York lends itself to. "It's New York that we're relating to," says Beth of the attitude on Seventh Avenue. "It's the theater, the concerts. There's no city that has so much." Donna Karan agrees, "I happen to be from New York and design in New York. But there's a special energy in New York today. It's pulsating and sets the pace for women with style — women in any city or country."
