VashingtOnJJTA) — The
Washington Post reported from
Vienna last week that the con-
troversy surrounding the alleg-
ed Nazi past of, former United
Nations Secretary General Kurt
Waldheim has led •to him in-
creasing his lead over his
socialist opponent in the Aus-
trian Presidential elections
scheduled for May 4.
Citing recent public opinion
pools since the controversy
erupted earlier this month, the
Post reported that Waldheim's
lead over his opponent, Kurt
Steyrer, has doubled, rising to
42 percent of the projected vote
against 34 percent for the
socialist.
The Post also quoted
Waldheim as saying in an inter-
view that "I was in the hills, do-
ing my work" when thousands
of Jews were being transported
daily from Solonika • to Nazi
death camps. He said he rarely
went to Solonika and "so I never
knew" of the round up of Jews
there.
Nazi hunter Simon Wiesen-
thal was quoted in the same
Post report as saying, "The SS
asked and got trains and food
from the German Army in the
Balkans to take out more than
40,000 people to Auschwitz. It
went on for many months, and
I cannot believe that Waldheim
did not known that was going
on."

Lisker Torah
Rededicated
In New York

New York (JTA) — In March
1944, as the Nazis overran
Hungary, an enraged Nazi sol-
dier, finding nobody home at the
Lisker Synagogue, threw the
Torah he found into the waters
of the Bodrog River, which
flowed through the synagogue's
backyard. Hidden from view, a
17-year old Christian boy,
Istvan Fenye, watched in dis-
gust, and as the Nazis departed,

Last Sunday, 42 years to the
day that the torah was dese-
crated, it was rededicated in a
profoundly moving ceremony at
the new Lisker Synagogue in
Manhattan. Before an unan-
ticipatedly large crowd, the
400-year old Torah was brought
out in a new white velvet cover
and marched into the street

the procession then returned in-
to the sanctuary to inscribe the
names of victims of the Holo-
caust who left no progenY, and
of loved ones of those present at
the ceremony. A special parch-
ment addition was provided at
the end of the Torah scroll upon
/ which a scribe penned the names
given.
