New York (JTA) — An in-
vestigation into an alleged $28
million money laundering
scheme at a yeshiva in Man-
hattan's Lower East Side will
continue, following the guilty
verdict against six companies
involved in the case last week.
The companies were ordered to
pay a total of $42,500 in fines
and restitutions. So far, 13
people have been found guilty of
charges stemming from the con-
tinuing investigation.
The yeshiva under investiga-
tion is the Mesivtha Tiferet
Jerusalem, the oldest yeshiva in
New York City. The investiga-
tion is being conducted by
Manhattan District Attorney
Robert Morgenthau's office.
According to the charges,
Rabbi Yisreal Eidelman, a vice
president of the yeshiva, and
Sendor Berkowitz, the head ac-
countant, used 64 separate bank
accounts and 12,000 checks to
launder money for merchants,
drug dealers and organized
crime figures from 1981 to 1983.
Eidelman and Berkowitz told
the authorities that they laund-
ered the money to keep the
financially troubled yeshiva
going.
The two were given suspended
sentences lat fall after pleading
guilty to misdemeanor banking
low violations.
Investigators say that the
yeshiva itself netted about
$200,000 between 1981 and
1983 from the money laundering
scheme.
A spokesman for the yeshiva,
Joshua Schloam, defended the
yeshiva, claiming that anything
that was done was done for the
yeshiva to survive. There are
presently 300 students at the
yeshiva compared with about
700 to 800 a few years ago. The
yeshiva was established in the
early 1900's for teaching and
training scholars and rabbis.
86 Soviet Jews
Emigrate In Feb.
New York (JTA) — Only 86
Jews were permitted to emigrate
from the U.S.5.R. during Feb-
ruary, the National Conference
on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ) has re-
ported. To date, a total of 165 Jews
have been granted visas in 1986,
reflecting little change in Soviet
Jewish emigration, which has all
but reached a standstill in the last
four years.
