THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 16 Friday, March 21, 1986 - .LOCAL NEWS • Putitn 1,. Continued from preceding page they were rescued. Does Purim make sense in 1986? It does to Anatoly Shcharansky, whose rescue to freedom surely took on biblical overtones. Imagine it yourself. One day you're sitting in a Soviet prison, and the next day you're in Israel sitting in your wife's apartment in Jerusalem. Talk about culture shock! Shcharansky reminds one of Mordechai, who re- fused to bow to the idol which the dreaded Haman held as he walked through the streets of Shushan. Shcharansky, too, refused to bow, this time to the pressures — phys- ical and psychological — of the KGB. Today Shcharansky can laugh about it, even as we laugh on Purim about what almost hap- pened. Does Purim make sense in 1986? When you think about Shushan and realize that today its ruler is still a madman like 'Haman was, but that his name is Khomeini, you realize how relev- ant Purim is. Haman may have died, but he never really went away. And so today, in ancient Persia, which we call Iran, there still is a ruler who calls for death to the Jews and for the destruction March 24 through March 29 at Jules R. What Khomeini does not know is that history does not treat very well those who call for the death of Jews in the palaces of Persia, whether the •capital be called Shushan or •Teheran. This year, when you stamp your foot at Ha- man's name, stamp it a second time for Khomeini, and for his colleague-in-evil, Qaddafi. Whether hatred for the Jew be hatred for our physical being or our spiritual being, and whether it be spoken in Russian accents or Iranian ones, we must face it with the perspective of Purim. We must be vigilant; we must be on guard; we must remember the connection between fate and faith, which is the lesson of the lots, namely how tenous life can be, just like a flip of a coin. And after we do all that, we should sit back, take a bite of our favorite hamentash, and have a good Purim laugh.
