Richard Leitman

Richard Leitman, director of
the Coleman School for Retarded
Children, died Feb. 28 at age 49.
A native Detroiter, Mr. Leit-
man earned a master's degree in
special education at Wayne State
University. Handicapped himself,
Mr. Leitman began volunteering
25 years ago assisting disabled
children at the Coleman School.
When the school closed he con-
tinued to be a strong advocate for
the handicapped, and established
a project called Services and
Equipment for the Multiple Dis-
abled. Since the project's end, Mr.
Leitman continued to lobby for
the rights of the handicapped.
He was a fund raiser for Camp
Fowler for the handicapped and
served on its board of directors. He
published many articles for and
about the life of the disabled.
