Rabbis List
Their Activities

Is a certain food additive a milk
derivative? Would you like a list-
ing of kosher butchers in the De-
troit area? Or, are you interested
in finding out more about
Judaism?
Whatever your Jewish ques-
tions, the Vaad Harabonim — De-
troit's Council of Orthodox Rabbis
— has the answer.
As a centralized group repre-
senting all the Orthodox rabbis in
the Metropolitan Detroit area, the
24-member council is unique. Ac-
cording to Rabbi Chaskel
Grubner, council menahel, there
are only two or three such unified
councils in North America.
The council members represent
Detroit, Toledo, Windsor and Ann
Arbor, and they supervise Kas-
hruth for bakeries, butchers,
caterers, hospitals, restaurants
and senior citizen homes, as well
as plants that manufacture or
process food products. In the pri-
vate sector, the Vaad supervises
the conversion of non-kosher
homes into kosher ones by indi-
vidual request.
The Vaad assigns chaplains
who serve in hospitals, nursing
homes and senior citizen centers.
And it offers courses and seminars
dealing with Jewish heritage.
Its Beth Din, or rabinnical
court, presides over disputes and
serves as a legal reference center
for individual questions of Jewish
law and practice.
The Vaad also supervises adop-
tion and conversion, marriage
and divorce, and issues publica-
tions dealing with Jewish holi-
days and with the availability of
kosher foods. It compiles, updates
and maintains community re-
cords.
The expenses incurred by the
Vaad in fulfilling its obligations
are covered principally by its an-
nual fundraising dinner,
scheduled this year on March 23
at the Westin Hotel. The honoree
is Senator Carl Levin.
For information about the Vaad
activities or its dinner, call the
Vaad office, 559-5005.
