they are quick to stress the positive —
Israel as a vacation paradise and as
the Holy Land — they are taking sev-
eral steps to assure Americans on the
terrorism issue.
The Tourism Ministry hosted 210
American rabbis this month — includ-

ing Detroiters Milton Arm, Efry
Spectre and Lane Steinger — in a new
effort to promote group tours of Israel.
This reporter was one of five American
Jewish journalists invited to Israel
last week to sample some of the dozens
of summer fun-and-learn programs for
high school and college-age youth. The
Israeli Cabinet last week appropriated
an additional $2.5 million for tourism
promotions, more than doubling the
budget in that category. And Max
Fisher's Operation Independence
group is asking American Jewish
organizations to hold their annual

Seeks New Reality

"The first thing we must do is see
each other as human beings," said a
Palestinian visiting from Israel this
week. "We have to stop defining the
other side by the stereotype we have of
it."
Mohammed Darawshi, an
'educator and social activist, was
speaking at the Birmingham Temple
on the topic of Arabs in the . Jewish
state. He is touring the United States
under the auspices of such groups as
the Progressive Zionist Caucus to

encourage the idea of dialogue be-
tween Jews and Arabs in Israel.
"Reality is war — continuing war
for the last 70 years, and we are still
stuck with trying to prove who's right
and who's wrong. That's' the main
worry the Arab community- and the
Jewish community all over the world

wrong, and to prove one side has More
