Elizabeth Cook
Twins Bat Mitzvah
Elizabeth Cook will ,twin the
observance of her bat mitzvah cel-
ebration with Yelena Cherniak,
the daughter of Alexander and
Polina Cherniak of Kiev, USSR,'
at 9 a.m. services Saturday at
Adat Shalom synagogue.
Cherniak and his wife Polina
first applied for a visa in February
1978 and received a refusal soon
after.
In November/December 1978
they were among ten other Kiev
refuseniks summoned to the Kiev
OVIR where they were seen by
the KGB. The purpose of these
talks was to frighten them; the
KGB threatened them with re-
pressions against them and their
families.
Ch,erniak, together with Elena
Oleynik and L. Frimerman, met
with the First Secretary of the
American Consulate David
Swartz in order to transmit a let-
ter to Sen. Abraham Ribicoff, who
arrived in the Soviet Union.
Mrs. Cherniak was among a
group of Kiev refuseniks who
were granted an interview with a
senior official of the Ukrainian
Supreme Soviet. However, when
they apprthiched the office build-
ing, they were promptly arrested
but released two weeks later.
Cherniak was arrested and ac-
cused of "swindling" and "forging
worksheets" at his place of work
and was sentenced to four years in
prison. All his property was con-
fiscated.
B'not Mitzvah
Share Their Day
Leslie Gold and Joanna Labes
will share their b'not mitzvah
ceremony with their twin in the
Soviet Union at 8:45 a.m. services
Saturday at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
Leslie, daughter of Linda and
Paul Gold and sister to Hedy, and
Joanna, daughter of Alice Labes,
have written many times to Alla
Aizenberg who lives with her par-
ents in Simferopol, Ukraine.
Alla's parents, Boris and Rita
Aizenberg, are both engineers.
Another daughter, Irina, a stu-
dent at the university, was expel-
led after her family requested
permission to emigrate in 1979.
After their first refusal, came sev-
eral more in 1980 and 1981.
Aizenberg's mother left for Is-
rael in 1977 and his sister emi-
grated n 1975.
