World Food Day is observed globally in order to increase awareness, understanding, and effective action on farm, food and hunger issues. It commemorates the founding of the United Na- tions Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Local progranis involve area school districts in utilizing cur- ricular materials prepared to as- sist teachers who provide instruc- tion regarding world hunger prob- lems at various grade levels. The Jewish Community Council as- sists in distribution of these mate- rials on behalf of the World Food Day Committee. In addition, Mrs. Israel has been assigned as a liaison to the Detroit Board of Education to enlist the board's endorsement of World Food Day programming. The Jewish Community Coun- cil has coordinated efforts of the World Food Day Committee to launch a campaign that would in- volve area restaurants in a hunger relief drive by asking that they donate a portion of their Oct. 16 profits to a special fund estab- lished to feed the hungry in southeastern Michigan. MarcipOf Dimes Benefit 'Luncheon People Reaching Out, a March of Dimes volunteer group, will present a spring fashion lunch- eon on Thursday at the' Michi- gan Inn, Southfield.
