Israel Cites Legal
Basis For
Demjanjuk Trial

Jerusalem (JTA) — The 1950
"Nazis and Nazi collaborators
punishment Law" will be the
basis for the trial of John Dem- •
janjuk, the Ukrainian-born
former U.S. citizen extradited to
Israel last week ago. The law
provides the death penalty and
spells out in detail the offenses
for which it can be imposed.
Demjanjuk, a retired auto
worker from Cleveland, Ohio,
was stripped of his' Affierican
citizenship on the basis of over-
whelming evidence that he serv-
ed as a guard at the Treblinka
death camp in Nazi-occupied
Poland during World War II
where he was known by inmates
as "Ivan the Terrible" because
of his extraordinary brutality.
He is also alleged to have per-
sonally operated the gas cham-
bers where scores of thousands
of Jews were murdered.
The 1950 law identifies as a
Nazi or Nazi collaborator a per-
son who commited specific
crimes against the Jewish peo-
ple, any act constituing crimes
against humanity and any act
constituting war crimes. The
law carefully defines each
category.
Crimes against the Jewish
people means any of the follow-
ing acts committed with intent
to destroy the Jewish people in
whole or in part: Killing Jews;
causing serious bodily or mental
harm to Jews; placing Jews in
living conditions calculated to
bring about their physical des-
truction; imposing measures in-
tended to prevent birth among
Jews; forcibly transferring
Jewish children to another na-
tional or religious group; des-
troying, or desecrating Jewish
religious or cultural assets or
values; inciting hatred of Jews.

Israeli Ballet
To Perform
In Poland

•Tel Aviv (JTA) — In the first
cultural exchange between
Israel and Poland since most
East European countries broke
relations with Israel during the
Six-Day War, the Israeli ballet
company, Bat-Dor, will perform
in three Polish cities. The ballet
troupe, which flew to Poland
last Sunday, will appear in War-
saw, Gdansk and Lodz.
The Polish national dance
company,' Mazowsze, will re-
ciprocate by performing in
Israel in May. Two Polish thea-
ter companies have been perfor-
ming in Tel Aviv in the past two
months.
The cultural exchanges, ac-
cording to Israeli officials, were
the result of a meeting last
September in the United Na-
tions between Deputy Prime
Minister and Foreign Minister
Yitzhak Shamir and Foreign
Minister Stefan Olszowski of
Poland.
