Israel Refuses
Black Hebrews

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A group of
26 Black Hebrews who had
sought to enter Israel as tour-
ists were returned to the United
States on last Sunday. The In-
terior Ministry issued the expul-
sion order on the grounds that
they were not tourists but in-
tended to join the Black Hebrew
community in Dimona and stay-
ing in the country illegally.
The Black Hebrews claim that
they are real Jews while other
Jews are imposters. The govern-
ment has restricted permission
for members of the Chicago-
based sect from entering the
country. But since the arrival
here some years ago of the first
group, their numbers in Israel
have increased to several hun-
dred through illegal entry.

New York (JTA) — Five
leading Black university officials
visited Israel last week in a pilot
project aimed at creating an aca-
demic bond between their insti-
tutions in the American south
and Hebrew University in Jeru-
salem.
"Our goal is to inaugurate a
series of academic exchanges
between scholars in Israel and
Black college leaders in the
United States," said Jacques
Torczyner, chairman of the inter-
religious and community rela-
tions department of the World
Zionist Organization, which is
co-sponsoring the project with
the World Jewish Congress,
Hebrew University and Israel
Colloquium, an interfaith group.
The Black academicians who
visited in Israel were Dr. Bar-
bara Carter, Spelman College,
Atlanta; Dr. Ann Covington,
Tougaloo College, Tougaloo,
Miss.; Dr. Mary Day; Howard
University, Washington, D.C.;
Dr. William P. Hytche, Univer-
sity of Maryland-Eastern Shore,
Princess Anne, Md.; Dr. Timo-
thy Langston, Florida A & M
