Teens Plan Israel Trip

Applications are now avail-
able for the third Israel teen
mission, July 9 - Aug. 17, spon-
sored by the Fresh Air Society,
the Jewish Welfare Federation,
United Hebrew Schools, and the
Jewish Community Center.
This program pairs 20 stu-
dents who have completed the
11th or 12th grades from the
Detroit area with 20 students
from the city of Ramla for 26
days of touring, and 12 days of
living with Israeli host families.
The touring program includes
Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, the
Galilee, Negev, Masada and the
Dead Sea.
The Israel teen mission is
geared toward leadership in De-
troit's Jewish youth. Prior to the
trip, there are three weekly
seminars on Israeli culture, cus-
toms and history and a weekend
at Camp- Maas.
The American trip leaders are
Risa and Billy Strauss. Mrs.
Strauss has a B.A. degree from
the University of Michigan in
Near Eastern and North African
studies. A former supervisor at
Camp Maas and past Shaarey
Zedek High School teacher and
youth coordinator, Mrs. Strauss
has also led the Israel teen mis-
sion since its inception.Strauss,
who will receive his master's
degree in geology from the Uni-

versity of Michigan, was a coun-
selor on the 1985 Israel teen
mission. He has also supervised
at Camp Maas, and taught at
Shaarey Zedek High School as
well as at the Hebrew Day
School of Ann Arbor.
Logistical support, including
transportation, housing, tour
guides and equipment is pro-
vided by the Youth and
Hehalutz Department of the
Jewish Agency in Israel. Finan-
cial assistance is available for
the program.
For information or brochure
and application, call the Fresh
Air Society, 661-0600.
