Martin Gilbert

"This lawyer's with the CIA!
You'll be going to jail for a
long time!" We told her I
would come back in several
days to see if she had an-

hotel,
Mr.
the
At
Shcharansky told me of his
friends on trial and in labor
camps. "Many of them told
the authorities they could be
rehabilitated." With sureness
and sadness, he said, "I won't
let that happen to me." He
didn't.
The same freedom he felt
on Moscow streets, and in the
prosecutor's office, he

of his fellow Jews who are de-
manding release from the Soviet
imprisonment. All freedom lov-
ers, everywhere, are obligated to
continue to share in this strug-
gle against tyranny.

Philippines as Marranos. Then
there was a sad period during
World War II when they • were
expelled. Their absence was
brief.
There are reportedly 500 Jews
in the Philippines, 200 of them
in Manila. Very interesting ac-
counts about the Jews there
should be read in both the Uni-
