Taba Talks
To Continue
In Cairo
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli
diplomats are scheduled to fly to
Cairo this week to continue their
talks with Egypt as scheduled
on the Taba arbitration. The re-
cent violence in Cairo and other
Egyptian cities has not been
allowed to delay the talks'
timetable — with both sides
seeking to demonstrate a busi-
ness as usual approach.
The Israeli team is led by
Avraham Tamir, Director-
General of the Prime Minister's
Office, and David Kimche,
Director-General of the Foreign
Ministry.
President Hosni Mubarak,
meanwhile, has reportedly con-
veyed his thanks to Prime
Minister Shimon Peres for the
Israeli Prime Minister's public
words of support at the height
of the disturbances in Egypt.
Mubarak conveyed his grati-
tude during a telephone conver-
sation with Minister-Without-
Portfolio Ezer Weizman, who
called to offer his own strong
support.
Israeli observers are confident
now that the wave of violence is
well under control, but there re-
mains a lingering concern over
the fundamental stability of
Mubarak's regime. The Egypt-
ian's determination to hold the
Taba talks as scheduled is seen
here as a deliberate demonstra-
tion by Mubarak that the crisis
has been weathered successfully.

Jerusalem (JTA) — Prime
Minister Shimon Peres last
week sent a warm message of
congratulations Co the new
Prdsident of the Philippines,
Corazon Aquino. "...Your vic-
tory is the victory of democracy
in the Philippines. We here in
Israel followed your struggle
with concern. We knew that the
great majority of the Filipino
nation stood at your side."
Peres praised Aquino's un-
usual courage, and said Israel
had known all along that justice
would triumph in the end. "We
were enchanted by the way you
pursued the struggle... to im-
prove the lot of your people,"
Peres stated.
The tenor and tone of the
cable transcended regular dip-
lomatic practice, and reflected
the sincere sense of gratification
'which most Israelis feel at the
outcome of the power struggle
in the Philippines.
Relations between the two
countries were warm under
President Marcos, and Israeli of-
ficials believe they will be no less
cordial under President Aquino.
