Marjorie Saulson
•

Marjorie Saulson of Birming-
ham was honored "for outstand-
ing voluntarism" at the United
Foundation's 19th annual Heart
of Gold luncheon.
Saulson and 10 other met-
ropolitan Detroit area volunteers
received a Heart of Gold at the
luncheon, which was co-
sponsored by the Heart of Gold
Award Council and Women for
the United Foundation (WUF).
Volunteer service for Saulson
began in 1970 when she joined
the Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah. She has served
Hadassah as membership vice
president, program vice
president, corresponding secre-
tary and Birmingham Group
president. Saulson has also
served as president of the League
of Jewish Women's Organiza-
tions of Greater Detroit.
To help promote understanding
between members of different
religions, she serves as the• vice
president of the American Jewish
Committee, Dbtroit Chapter and
as chairman of inter-religious af-
fairs. In addition, Saulson works
with Ecumenical Institute for
Jewish-Christian Studies.
Saulson is also an active
member of her synagogue, Cong.
Shaarey Zedek. She is president
of the sisterhood of the congrega-
tion and responsible for many in-
novations in the Congregation
including increased participation
of women in the worship service,
and the first Sisterhood Sabbath.
She also founded and chaired the
first adult bat mitzvah class.
Saulson has been an active
volunteer with the Jewish , Wel-
fare Federation. She has served
on the Federation Junior Di-
vision Executive Committee,
Outreach Committee of
Synagogue-Federation Relations
and the Women's Division.
She also is a nationally accre-
dited discussion leader for the
Michigan Branch of the Women's
League for Conservative Judaism
and she serves as the Torah Fund
vice president. In addition, she
serves as the general chairman of
the international exhibit, "Anne
Frank in the World: 1925-1945"
scheduled to open this spring in
the Detroit area.
Saulson has also worked in the
Birmingham Public Schools serv-
ing as the department head of
foreign languages and teaching
Russian and French. Her studies
took her abroad to both,France
and the U.S.S.R.
