Senator Ted Kennedy was in- strumental in helping them re- ceive permission. We urge you to send him letters of thanks. His address is: Senate Office Build- ing, Washington, D.C. 20510. Rae Sharfman Chairman, Friends of Soviet Jewry Education and Information Center Shcharanskys: Real Heroes Your referring in the editorial of Feb. 14 to Anatoly Shcharansky as an authentic hero, indeed, strikes the right note, as is his Avital a woman of valor. His occasional naming her, in the reports of his ordeal, shows more eloquently than words, the deep affection that obtains be- tween them; a most enduring sentiment that must have helped them both with fortitude and hope while subject to incarcera- tion and what appeared as a bleak horizon — but not dispair. Doubtless their return to Jewish sanctities was the mainspring of their courage ... Anatoly Shcharansky is only 38 years old. In the years ahead in Israel he will assuredly be heard from. Isaac London Solving The Yerida Problem Finally, a well-written article (Feb. 14, "Why Are Jews Leaving The Promised Land?") on Israel's catastrophic yordim problem which all too long has been glos- sed over with the wishfull pre- tension that it will simply go away. Israel's official attitude is usu- ally ambivalent, and a weak case could be made for the thought that the country is better off without these deserter-yordim ("if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen") who are usu- ally motivated by greed: 'the fleshpots are too tempting, as, conversely, is a prospective low- cost employee. Of particular irony are yordim employed for interminable years by Israel-supporting organiza- tions, even though the hiring in- tent was to temporarily fill a vac- ancy, until a local person had been found to permanently fill that job ... Israel can plug a lot of this dis- • astrous population drain by adopting steps effectively used by other democracies: Those who re- ceive a university education sub- sidized in part or totally with public funds are required to repay the government before leaving. Recipients of other gov- ernment grants or subsidies are treated in the same manner. Israel, being nearly forty years old and a leading political and military factor, can no longer af- ford to consider her inhabitants perennial welfare cases or in- fants. She should begin to treat Big & Tall Southfield at 10 1 '7 Mile • 569.6930 all government payouts as long- term obligations of the recipient. Repayments must be used to es- tablish a revolving fund for futureolim assistance. Israelis deserting their country without appropriate clearances can be taxed accordingly in ab- sentia, and these taxes, plus debts and debt service, can be col- lected upon their return. Those compelled to leave the country by restrictive currency regulations which deprive them of their Nazi restitutions or simi- lar benefits can be accommodates with suitable exemptions. The large Israeli group in Germany, living there because they could not truly use their restitutions at home, does little to enhance Is- rael's image. Foreign employers can be dis- couraged from enticing Israelis to leave their country. Any em- ployment offer, unless certified to be in the national interest, can be restricted to clearly-defined pro- fessional training on a time- limited basis, at prevailing local remuneration levels. This would give Israeli industry additional and urgently needed training and put some money in the trainee's pocket. /Attil a e V3. 11(11Hi I, (1 \ %431 . 11: 3 7 DESIGNS IN DECORATOR LAMINATES For High Quality Formica Always At A Great Discount SPECIALIZING IN • credenzas • bedroom • tables • cubes groupings • desks • wall units • shelves ALSO SPECIALIZING IN • woods • glass • metals • luciteis IT DOESN'T HAVE TO COST A FORTUNE ONLY LOOK LIKE IT! Find Out About The Peace, Soviets, Czechs, Kahane I came to the U.S.A. recently from Czechoslovakia, so I hope you will understand that my English is far from perfect. I would like to make several remarks: the article of Dr. Steve Daniels "An Activist Argues Against Star Wars, Nuclear Arms" (Jewish News, Feb. 21) is full of statements showing politi- cal immaturity. Dr. Daniels writes that "Soviet IPPNW members have been influential in convincing their government of the insanity of nuclear war." Is he really so naive that he thinks the Soviet government can be convinced of anything by anybody? Probably he is if he is a leading member of IPPNVV, an organization which (as other similar organizations) can never be of.any positive influence upon the peace on earth. The only factor, which can play a positive role is a militarily strong U.S.A. But Dr. Daniels apparently thinks that the oppo- site is true. In his article he even attributes some really peaceful activity to the USSR. I think Dr. Daniels should become a little more familiar with the structure and chardcter of the foreign (and also inner) policy of the USSR before he starts making "peace" prop-, aganda. The article "U.S. Rights Report Cites Israeli-Arab Tensions" (Feb. 21) particularly the sen- tences "In Romania, the govern- ment continues to support a widespread and active Jewish community organization. The same is true in Czechoslovakia," don't know anything about Romania, but I know for sure Continued on next page ISRAEL BOND Which Pays 71/4% * Annual Interest Rate For IRA's ONLY This is not an offering.
