Tying a shoe is a task most of
us take for granted. But for
some Of us, its much more.
it's an achievement.

Three out of every 100
Americans are mentally
retarded. That's six million
people who need our help
and encouragement. Not to
tie their shoes for them, but
to help them learn to do
things for themselves.

Through the ARC—the Associa-

tion for Retarded
Citizens—America's retarded
citizens are learning to be
self-sufficient. ARC provides
lob training workshops,
educational programs,
sheltered workshops and
neighborhood housing to
help retarded people help
themselves.

Over 85% of America's retard-
ed citizens can lead produc-
tive lives. Even the most

severely retarded people can
learn to stand on their own
two feet.

its a big Job But a rewarding
one. ARC needs you to give
whatever you can—time,
money, lobs, housing oppor-
tunity, understanding.

Next time you bend over to
tie your shoes, remember
those who need a little more
help—and remember that you
can give it.

Give every.

Canadian Group
Protests Ruling
On Artukovic

Toronto (JTA) — About 2000
demonstrators protested out-
side the U.S. Consulate here last
Sunday against the extradition
of war criminal Andrija Artu-
kovic to Yugoslavia to stand
trial for his activities as Interior
Minister of the Nazi puppet
state of Croatia during World
War II.
Artukovic, who lived in Cali-
fornia since entering the U.S. in
1948, was accused by the Jus-
tice Department of the wartime
persecution or murder of
700,000 Serbians, 40,000 Gyp-
sies and 28,000 Jews. The
demonstration here was aimed
against current Canadian efforts
to root out Nazi war criminals as
much as it was against the U.S.
action.
One demonstrator, without
warning, dowsed himself with
gasoline and set himself afire,
shouting "Long live Croatia."
He was rushed to Wellesley
Hospital where he is reported in
critical condition.
The other demonstrators dis-
approved of the self-immolation.
But Dr. Josep Gamalin, a
spokesman for the group, de-
nounced the Deschenes Corn-
mission's inquiry into Nazi war
criminals living in Canada.
The Canadian government,
more than a year ago, appointed
former Quebec superior Court
Judge Jules Deschenes to serve
as a one-man commission to
determine how many Nazi war
criminals are living in Canada
and to recommend ways to deal
with them. The commission was
to have submitted its report last
December but was given a six
month extension so that Judge
Deschenes aides could visit the
Soviet Union and other Eastern
European countries to gather
first hand evidence on war
criminals presently living in
Canada.
Organized ethnic groups of
Eastern European origin are
protesting what they allege to
be "tainted" evidence from com-
munist sources. Jewish groups
strongly support the Deschenes
commission investigation.
