Sukkot in Minsk synagogue: "On the second day of
sukkot, we brought cake, bread, cognac, and
chocolate...to contribute to the meal after services. As
we were about to enter the sukkah, the militia arrived,
ostensibly to inspect the zoning permits for the new
matzah-baking oven that was being built next to the
synagogue. They said it would take a few hours,
making it necessary, of course, to cancel the meal." —
