Hadass Presents
Credentials -
In Spain
•
. Jerusalem (JTA) — Shmuel
Hadass became Israel's first
Ambassador to Spain when he
presented his credential last
week to King Juan Caries in
Madrid. Hadass has been Is-
rael's unofficial representative
in Spain since 1981 while serving
as representative to the World
Tourist Organization in Madrid.
Spain and Israel announced
the establishment of diplomatic"
relatioris last-month. The an-
nouncements were-made simul-
taneously in Jerusalem, Madrid
and The Hague where the docu-
ments of mutual recognition
were signed by Yeshayahu
Anog, deputy director general of
the Israeli Foreign Ministry,
and Maximo de Kaj al, director
of the European Affairs Depart-
ment of the Spanish Foreign
Ministry.
Spain is the last Western
European nation to establish
full diplomatic ties with Israel,
a move sought for many years
by the Jewish State. However,
both countries made political
statements indicating that their
new formal relationship will not
affect their respective policies,
which differ sharply on the Mid-
dle East.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Yasha
Gorodetzky, a Leningrad
mathematician and a leading
aliya activist for the past six
years, arrived here last week
from Vienna with his wife and
family. He is the second promi-
nent Jewish activist allowed to
leave the Soviet Union in a two
week period. Eliahu (Ilya)
Essas, also a mathematician,
arrived in Israel with his fami-
ly. January 22.
Gorodetzky, 40, accom-
panied by his wife, Pauline, 37,
their four-year old daughter,
and his wife's mother, told
reporters he did not know why
he was suddenly granted an ex-

denied one. He has been, in re-
cent years, a central figure in
the Soviet JewrY movement.
An outspoken Zionist since
1980, he was denied an exit
