In a speech before the Booker T. Washington Association in De- troit, Jack A. Robinson, one of three people to receive the asso- ciation's Brotherhood Award, said, "As a Jew, I am concerned over what appears to be a grow- ing estrangement among some members of the black and Jewish communities." Robinson urged the leadership among blacks and Jews to rally their forces to assure that the his- toric black and Jewish alliance survives. "Only a month ago, this nation stopped to celebrate — for the first time — a national holiday commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr.," said Robinson. "I re- flected at the time how blacks and Jeigs historically joined forces to fight on behalf of free- dom and personal dignity with arms around each other. Now, it appears that some among us are at arm's length." He suggested that whatever political and philosophical dif- ferences exist between the two groups could be settled. "We belong to one family dedi- cated to the concepts of brother- hood, and families can withstand dissent among their ranks," Robinson said. "We have a common enemy. That enemy is prejudice, dis- crimination,, inequality and in- justice," he said. "To destroy this ,enemy, we need the collective strength of our two peoples." Robinson called on black and Jewish communities to recommit themselves to cementing their unity. "We have an obligation to do that not only for ourselves, but for our children," he said. "We have that obligation because few people have suffered as we have."
