BY ZE'EV CHAFETS Special to The Jewish News Every year at about this time, there is a procession along the Yellow Brick Road that leads to Amman, that Middle Eastern Oz. The supplicants include cowardly Palestinian lions from the West Bank who come seek- ing courage; Israeli tin-statesmen, hoping to find a loving partner; jour- nalistic scarecrows in search of a story; and, of course, a credulous heard tales of the wizard's wisdom, moderation and impeccable tailoring; and they fervently believe that he can, if he so chooses, make their dreams come true. At first, they are not disap- pointed. The wizard receives them in his splendid palace, dazzles them with his royal hospitality and promises to help. But as months go by, the supplicants are forced to conclude that nothing is happening. Can it be, they wonder, that Hussein has let them down? The wizard shrugs with resigna- tion. He would like to do more, but unfortunately his powers are cir- cumscribed by the Wicked Witch of the North, Hafez Assad; the Wicked Witch of the East, the Ayatollah Continued on Page 25 Flint's Michael Pelavin To Head National Unit New York — Michael A. Pelavin of Flint was elected chair of the Na- tional Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council during the -NKRAC's annual plenary session last week. David Lebenbom, former president of Detroit's Jewish Com- munity Council, was elected a vice chairman. The NJCRAC is the national coordinating body for Jewish commu- nity relations, comprised of 11 na- tional and 113 local Jewish commu- nity relations agencies. Pelavin told the NJCRAC that he hoped to devote his energies to prom- citing the Jewish community relations field's domestic social agenda. "In these times when the Ad- ministration and many members of Congress are talking about cutting lifelines that are essential for protect- ing our nation's disadvantaged citi- zens, I believe it is more important -than ever to stand up for the basic principles of fairness, pid, equity - which have guided the NJCRAC's ac- tivities for more than four decades. American. Jews understand full well the degree to which the harmony of any society can be jeopardized by eco- nomic deprivation."
