Andrea Lynne Rapp, daughter
of Caren and Larry Rapp of South-
field, will share her bat mitzvah
with Marina Gutman tonight at
the Birmingham Temple. Marina
is the daughter of Alla and
Amiram Gutman of Kedainiai,
Lithuania, USSR.
The twinning ceremony sym-
bolically links Andrea with
Marina, who will celebrate her
bat mitzvah in absentia since no
Soviet child under the age of 16
may participate in a religious
ceremony.
The Gutmans have been re-
fused permission to emigrate to
Israel since their initial request in
1976. The official Soviet reason
for denial has been "army serv-
ice."
To date there has been no re-
sponse from the Gutmans to
correspondence initiated by
Andrea. Andrea has also written
letters to President Reagan, U.S.
Senators Carl Levin and Donald
Riegle, and U.S. Representative
Sander Levin advising them of
the Gutmans' situation. She has
presently received responses from
Sena Levin and Riegle.
The location of the Gutmans in
Lithuania is of particular signifi-
cance to Andrea, because in 1906
her maternal great-grandparents
Etta and Isaac Sherling emi-
grated to the United States from
Lithuania. According to the De-
troit Soviet Jewry Committee of
the Jewish Community Council,
there are relatively few Jews of
any age remaining in Lithuania.
Melissa Waldman
Has Bat Mitzvah
Melissa Waldman, daughter of
Jay and Nancy Waldman of
Southfield, and sister of Stacey,
will celebrate her bat mitzvah at
Cong. Beth Shalom at 9 a.m.
Saturday. She will twin her cere-
mony with Lelia Braun, daughter
of Adolf and Gelena Braun of the
Ukraine in the Soviet Union.
Joining Melissa and her family
in this simcha will be five cousins
who immigrated to New York
from Russia in 1979.
Lelia is the daughter of Adolf
and Gelena Braun. Her father is a
painter/electrician. The family
first applied to emigrate in 1975,
but was refused because of
Braun's army service. They last
were refused permission to leave
in 1979.
