sent generation of young people
are growing up in a world that has
changed from that of earlier gen-
erations. "I think the biggest dif-
ference in our time is we have
many more people who are com-
fortable financially than ever be-
fore, and nowadays there is less
parental supervision."
Cowan blames parents for
being reluctant to say "NO" to
their children. He observes that
some children don't get exposed to
"no" until they are in school.
"Young people need to know there
are parameters, limits, and need
to know there's someone looking
over their shoulders."
As a high school principal, he
has mixed feelings on teens hold-
ing down part-time jobs. Cowan
maintains that kids only go
through school once and they
have their whole life to live. Hav-
ing a job, unless financially a
necessity, gives students less time
to be involved in extracurricular
school activities, which to him is
an integral part of their educa-
tion.
He does concede there are sev-
eral plusses a job can give a stu-
dent. To Cowan, the key to having
young people who are well-
behaved outside of school hours is
"keeping them active in some-
thing that utilizes their time,
rather than them having nothing

to do with their time."
Affluence is coming earlier in
many people's lives. The average
age of executives and people with
power is dropping. Hribljan con-
tends that more of our area teens
are growing up in homes where

Most teens find the
troublemakers'
behavior reprehensible.

money is plentiful and they don't
see a need for industry and earn-
ing their own way. He says some
parents are just too busy with
their own schedules to supervise
their kids. He foresees an erosion
of moral ethics if families don't
take a cold, hard look at their val-
ues.
As Officer Nelson put it, "We
can remind parents to be respon-
sible for their kids . . . Some par-
ents are so busy with their own
schedules, they really shouldn't
have kids it seems, cause they
don't have time for them. Their
kids get into trouble and they say,
'I know they wouldn't.' Well, how
do they know? They don't even
know what their son or daughter
is really like if they aren't home.
The parents need to check up on
their kids and see what's going
on."
