Bulimics Get Aid From Sinai — 1L IV % Join Us For • A Pleasant Surprise and e Discover That THERE IS A DIFFERENCEI Jerri Litt Sinai Mental Health Center of West Bloomfield offers a nine- week treatment program for per- sons with bulimia. Bulimia, which is estimated to effect approximately 20 percent of college, age women, is char- acterized by uncontrolled cycles of binge-eating followed by self- induced vomiting. The program is run by Sinai clinical psychologist Dr. Bradley Sewick, and provides patients with aggressive behavioral prescriptions to break the bulimic cycle. During the course of the pro- gram, participants are given a series of weekly guidelines to fol- low in an effort to bring structure to eating patterns that have be- come uncontrollable. Participants are then taught a number of specialized techniques to break specific behaviors in- volved in the binge eating-purge cycle as well as more generalized_ techniques to reduce stress in everyday living. The group meets for one session in a restaurant to help partici- pants overcome social eating an- xieties which typically accom- pany bulimia.
