VARIETY CLUB of Detroit
has been helping needy children
,since 1932 . . . but it is significant
• to note that this very fine, worthy
'organization does much to make
;its members happy too . . . Besides
`the knowledge that youngsters
are given "new life" with elec-
`tronic artifical limbs, among
Variety's many charitable
`endeavors, these guys 'n gals also
concentrate on entertaining
themselves.
Each monthly luncheon meet-
ing is reporting fulfillment of its
'endeavors . . . plus an enjoyable
afternoon . . . Latest at Comedy

THE MYSTERY MUNCHER
WRITES . . . "If you're a traveler,

you may think back on some of the
more memorable meals you've
enjoyed. They could include pasta
any style in Italy where pizza and
spaghetti with meat balls are un-
heard of. You probably wouldn't
rave about the food in London or
even in Paris unless you hap-
pened to frequent expensive res-
taurants with truly haute cuisine.
"Some travelers prefer the
onion soup in Toronto or Montreal
to that served in some Parisian
dining rooms where the, chef uses
spices with a heavy hand. In New
Orleans, you're in for a taste treat
with flaming banana Foster,
shrimp gumbo, crepes Suzette and
brioche in the open marketplace.
Buffet dinners, typical in tropical
islands, are generally disappoint-
ing eating orgies.
"Closer to home, the places we
think of off the tops of our heads
are Picallo Mondo's in New York
. where we loved the cold as-
paragus appetizer and bay seal-
- lops, Tony Roma's and Joe's Stone
Crab in Miami and Harborplace
in Baltimore where the crab cakes
are super, especially eaten by the
water.
"When we think of dining in the
Detroit area, it seems as though
many of the restaurants of yes-
teryear had the best food. But
when you're hungry, you can't
beat a couple of Lafayette Coney
Islands at places which continue
to survive while too many posh
dining spots lose their popularity,
change hands or just fade away."
