ADL Rejects
Arab-American
Leaders' Charge

New York (JTA) — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith last Monday rejected as
"totally unfounded" allegations
by Arab American leaders
before the United States Civil
Rights Commission that the
ADL, among other American
Jewish groups, had encouraged
anti-Arab stereotyping , and
engaged in intimation against
Arabs Americans.

"The record shows that the
ADL, in its 73-year history, has
consistently and vigorously op-
posed discrimination, stereo-
typing and intimidation directed
against any ethnic group, in-
cluding Arab Americans,"
,declared Juntin Finger, director
of the ADL's civil rights div-
ision.

He was responding published
reports on the Civil Rights
Commission hearings at which
two prominent Arab American
leaders asserted that major
Jewish groups as well as pol-
iticians and the news and enter-
tainment *media had encouraged
a negative protrayal of Arabs.
Former Senator James Abourezk
(D.S.D) who heads the American
Arab Anti-Discrimintion Com-
mittee, and James Zogby,, ex-
ecutive director of the Arab-
American Institute, cited recent
incidents of violence against
Arab American, including the
bombing murder last year in
Los Angeles of Alex Odeh, the
ADC's West coast coordinator.

West German
Mayor Resigns
Under Attack

ti

Bonn (JTA) — The Mayor of
a West German' town who sug-
gested thatt "a few rich Jews
should be slain" in order to
balance the budget has resigned
under a barrage of criticism.
Wilderich Von Mierbach of
Korschenbroich, a town of
27,000 in North Rhine-West-
phalia, said last Monday he was
quitting to avoid further dam-
age to West Germany's image
abroad and to the process of
German-Jewish reconciliation.

Von Mierbach made the anti-
Semitic remark at a meeting of
the town council's budget com-
mittee last December. The local
newspaper, owned by a member
of the Christian Democratic
Union (CDU), the Mayor's
party, suppressed it but it came
to general media 'attention last
▪ month and triggered outrage.
Von Mierbach offered an
apology. But the Jewish com-
munity in nearby Dusseldorf
filed a law suit and calls for
his resignation came from
non-Jewish as well as Jewish
quarters.
