that will really work. It is
beating "bombs" into "plow-
shares" — not because plow-
shares are nicer but because
they are more effective as
weapons.
Some Jews may think that
this scenario is ridiculous
because they identify the
Soviet Union with Hitler.
Against Hitler, they say,
such cautious steps down
from the arms race would not
have worked. True enough. If
Hitler had had H-bombs,
nothing would have worked.
Not surrender. Not counter-
force strategy. Not minimum
deterrence. Not negotiations.
Nothing. The planet would
have been Auschwitz already.
The Soviet Union is not
Hitler, or we would be dead
already. It has been 30 years
since Stalin died. His suc- -
cessors act like disgusting
Great Powers — internally
repressive, externally im-
perialist, and in both spheres
anti-Semitic. Disgusting.
Dangerous. Like the' Tsar,
like the Crusaders. But not
Hitler.
This time, the holocaust is
much more likely to come not
from demonic arrogance and
hatred in one power, but from
two great powers that are
mortally afraid of each other,
and each act out of fear in
ways that to the other seems
dangerous. The demonic ar-
rogance appears in each
side's belief that it can
manage and control every
detail of such extremely
dangerous systems.
What then should be the
stance of American Jews
toward the nuclear arms
race? Our present strong
commitment to Soviet Jewry
is getting them, and us,
nowhere. Our broad but
vague commitment to arms
control is getting nowhere. It
is time for the organized
American Jewish community
to pursue a strategy of
Transarmament.

Elmer Winter, chairman of
the Committee for Economic
Growth of. Israel (CEGI), an-
nounced the launching of a
nationwide program to stimu-
late the purchase of Israeli con-
sumer goods.
The 'program, called "Opera-
tion Join Up," is designed to
create demand for Israeli prod-
ucts in retail stores throughout
the country.
"Operation Join Up" calls for
a local survey of stores that sell
Israeli products, Winter said.
Once the survey is completed,
the findings can be made avail-
able locally, informing shoppers
where they can buy Israeli
products; among them foods,
wines and apparel.
