The liberal image which Gor-
bachev has acquired in the West is
not reflected in improved condi-
tions in Soviet labor camps,
Shcharansky points out. "All his
good words did not affect our
reality. In many respects the situ-
ation over the past two years be-
came even worse.
"If there was optimism it was
mainly because the American
administration's policy is now
much more cautious than it was
during the time of President Ni-
xon's detente."
It is not hard to see why the
Soviet authorities decided to si-
lence Anatoly Shcharansky: with
his extraordinary intelligence,
dedication, charisma and his
complete fluency in English, he
was a superbly effective spokes-
man on behalf of Soviet Jews and
other oppressed minorities seek-
ing their freedom. Indeed, his
principal offense when he finally
appeared in court after 16 months
of relentess interrogatiOn by the
KGB concerned his contacts with
U.S. journalists based in Moscow.
Now, nine years later, a figure
emerges from the gloom of the
Hilton Hotel auditorium in
Jerusalem to ask a question. It is
one of the correspondents who has
flown in specially for the occasion.
"David Shipler — The New
York Times," he announces.
Anatoly Shcharansky leans
forward excitedly in his chair and
peers through the glare of the
television klieglights. "You see,"
he says delightedly, "there is one
of my 'criminal contacts' from
- Moscow."
"Yes," says Shipler, "and I'm
proud of it."

Cong. Beth Achim, in associa-
tion with its resident caterer,
Sperber's Kosher Catering, will
hold- its second ethnic dinner of
the year on March 4.
The dinner will feature Hunga-
rian food. As with the first dinner,
two main courses will be available
— chicken or beef. The entrees for
the March 4 dinner will be chic-
ken paprikash or stuffed cabbage.
The meal will consist of Hunga-
rian vegetable soup, main course,
rice or potato (depending on main
course), cucumber salad, bever-
age and dessert. An alternative
children's dinner is available.
There will be two Beatings at
Wasserman Hall: 6:1 5 p.m. and 7
p.m. Pre-paid reservations must
be received at, the synagogue
